I suppose I am a victim of the fake wiimotes... too bad I didn't see this until after I got them. I bought them for use as an interactive whiteboard and they just won't pick up the infrared pen unless it is pointed directly at the wiimote.

I had borrowed a wiimote from a student and the pen that I made worked perfectly! So thats why I decided to get 2 for myself. I live in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia so the price and free shipping from Hong Kong was very attractive. The wiimotes on sale here were $80 or more... and no real guarantee that they are not fake as well (most things here come from china anyway).

I will check out the place on ebay and see if they have w return policy... more money to send them back. I have student checking to see how well the remotes work on his wii console... if they will even sync with the console.

I tried Glovepie with the remotes and the accelerometer seemed to work well for the wiimouse application. Just a bad IR camera!!! what I really want it for!!!

The one I have looks identical, branding, markings, stickers, packaging and all. It does feel a little lighter and less robust.

I'm saying a fake but potentially more likely in my case its an insider taking manufacturing rejects and selling on the sly. It looks too close to be a fake.

The one you have is actually upfront that its not a Wii product, be interesting to see what they are like. In my view some one who is honest that they are not teh real deal is more likely to produce something worthwhile than someone imitating (they also could eb as bad as each other too!.

Be careful its the IR-camera (what we need the most) that is most problematic so likely the accelerometer is fine. I find BT is a little problematic.

I have a offciial Wiimote and a fake infront of me know I will post the differences and what to tell later today.

I was able to play around the Wu brand remote.  As it turned out, IR tracking is really poor.  I've been trying on different positions.  The reason why I am saying that this remote would be useless for our project is that I have mounted my original remote in a position where I could have perfect tracking.  After that, I replaced the original remote with the Wu brand in the same location/position as the original one.  I was only able calibrate a single corner of my screen.

I guess, I will just use the accelerometer in this remote for other purposes.

My advise to the others, please buy the original remote. 

On my wiimote the text is carved very lightly, does this mean it is a fakemote? It did come in a wiimote+wiiplay box set that I got from amazon, so I thought it would be alright...

Before starting my question, I want to thank all people that are working on that project !!

Ok so I would like to have my wiimote whiteboard. So I bought a wiimote on dealextreme (sorry if telling that is forbidden). I think it's a fake. When Smoothboard is on it detect four dots (it's written in the bottom of the soft) but in the little screen we can crearly see that the wiimote see no dot or just the one of the IR Pen (red circle) . And I think IR camera is good because the red circle appears at great distance (3m).
Presenter mods is in fonction, even if coordonate are inverted (I don't know why ). I can move the mouse, but as I didn't calibrate the wiimote it don't work.
So if the IR camera is good, is there a way, in modifying the soft to make the soft fit to these wiimote ?
