Hey you!

Sorry I didn't have time to update here yesterday. We got all our parts from Kjell & Co and were really eager to get to work! Thanks to you, and my preperations the construction went super smooth. The setup contained in 2 AA-batteries (2x1.5V), 18Ohm (0,25W) resistor and a 1,2V IR-Led at 100mA. Just for kicks I tried out running on a single AA battery and with a bunch of different resistors, but the first try was the best.




When I knew the **LOVE** would work I went for the trash, founding an old whiteboard pen. I threw out the internals, taped the batterypack, and glued on my IR Led. It looks like crap, but hey function before form, right? Think that's the first time I ever said that. So with the easy part done I had a couple of frustrating hours trying to get the pen working with my laptop, trying out different positions with my wiimote. About eight o'clock tonight I got it working. Success! Cheesy

He just replaced the source graphic files (no programming was required). Instead of a dog he had a condom and instead of ducks he had pictures of HIV/Aids cells. What would be cool is if it could become physical using your concept. Is it possible for you make the program so the background, falling objects & dodge character are *.jpg files so users can customise?

Sweet! The project ain't done yet and people are already buying it! Sure you could have the game. 1000 USD will do the trick. Just kidding. Of course you can have the game when it's done. It won't be any problem for you to change images in the flash file when it's done. I do recommend that you use *.png files though. *.png's supports transparency.

Btw, I might want to quote your statement when we write our final report! Wink

So, made a bit of a disappointing discovery today. I was looking at some drawings of people who had used Johnny Lee's technique to see how they had sat it up. I tried to do the same, but couldn't get my numbers straight, until i realized I forgot the players length needed to be in the equation. This changed things drastically, and according to my numbers i need the Wiimote to be 510cm up in the air. That sucks, since the sealing is 4m up. If it's unclear the white small box at the top is the wiimote, the red dot at the mans head is the IR-LED, the big black box is the projector. We want a playing area of 3x3m.



So, back to the drawing table trying to figure things out. I finally got this sketch, but I don't know if it's going to work or not. Do you understand my drawing? Will i have to recalculate every time a longer or short person enters the stage? Do you have some other smart solution?

Could you make them IR-shoes?

This would make it more realistic to the persons movements. If its on their head, the head position is more important and would be difficult to triangulate to the feets position on the floor, thus i could dodge ducks by bending over.

If IR-leds are placed on the toe of a pair of shoes (thongs would be more hygeinic and easy to rig), with the wiimote placed facing the person. Then it's their feet position, which is automatically related to the floor surface that matters and as long as they face the wiimote there will be no problems viewing the IR-source.

Hey guys!
Last night I finally got the game tested "for real"! It was great fun, but also taught us a lot. I took some pics and filmed some, but forgot my cell at home, so that'll have to wait.

Few questions:
I run WiimoteWhiteboard for my Mac. Is this the best?
What happens if I run the mouse with multiple (up to 4) IR sources?
If I put some IR LEDs really closely, will the wiimote see this as one big source or a few small?


@ben: That's a great idea! Today I'll be creating a few more prototypes for the helmet and some to put on your shoes.

@guiguito: True. If we had two IR sources we theoretically could do that evaluation. It's waay above our tech skills though.

The Java wiimote is the best on Mac OS (Use Boonjins WiimoteSmoothbaord if in Mac Bootcamp).

Multiple IR-sources will cause the mouse to jump between the them, you will need to look at the multitouch apps (not my area of knowledge).

The wiimote only tracks the IR-Blobs, if two seperate blobs join it will assume is one, the run to two when they seperate.

Hi, I'm the developer of the Java WiimoteWhiteboard app. As far as I know, there is currently no other Whiteboard app running on the Mac...

I just saw this thread and only looked briefly at the older posts, but you want to make a game where multiple people are running around with IR leds, right?
If so, there's no way around using the multi-touch protocol TUIO (if you want to keep using my app).
In order to use TUIO in Flash, you need to run the gateway flosc.

To your 3rd question, a really close IR light should be detected as a single blob.
The Wiimote can actually send the size of each blob to the computer (currently not used in my app, but possible)

Well, our primary idea was a multiplayer game. But as the project went on we decided to stick to single player only. Tonight we'll try out a few new solutions regarding the placement of the IR leds. if they don't work we're in biiiig trouble! Smiley

Ok, so bit of a break last night! The placement of the IR LEDs will be at the waist, fastened with a clip in the belt. Works Super!! This is definitely the optimal placement. The height doesn't differ to much between persons, you don't really bend or twist that area of the body and it's definitely in the center point. So today I'll be creating a new prototype.

The comb (of a cockerel) idea worked great! There was no jumping or sketchy appearance of the mouse even though I used four different placements of the LEDs. When the comb was placed on our helmet I could look all the way from the floor to the ceiling without losing connection. I recommend that technique for equal projects!

On Tuesday we're traveling to Stockholm! It's a bit nervous, but I think we're pretty good scheduled.

Hey you guys!

So 4 HECTIC week has passed! Last week has been incredibly fun, but also very stressful. The exhibition in Stockholm went super well and the jury loved our prototype, even offering us a space at an exhibition in London!!!

I'll update with some images and movie clips in a few days, until then you can read about our prototype in the magazine made after the exhibition. Enjoy!
