We now have a multiple switch pen, with both nib pressure and manual switch activation it can be used with a normal writing action on a board/surface or with the manual switch for non-contact use.

The Djewel pen available through ebay and www.irpens.co.uk

No problem, the feedback I'm getting through Ebay is showing just how popular the 'nib' switch is (other names welcomed!) - the manual version is also pretty good at getting children to hold the pen in an appropriate position with the need to depress the button with the index finger, but it is staff mainly who want to be able to 'just write'.
