backwards facing pen?
«

Hi Folks,
Has anyone tried using a backwards facing pen - i.e. one where the IRLED is on the back of the pen facing away from the board and towards the Wiimote, rather than using the IRLED touching the board. I tried a bit of improvisation today and it seemed to work well, so long as the "pen" was only short so that the distance between the board and the IRLED was short. I seemed to get very accurate tracking and much better handwritten text this way.
Anyone else tried this?

I have tried it by just inverting the pen that I created, but you will have to be very careful to keep both ends parallel to each other with respect to the wii remote to make sure that the end that touches your surface is totally aligned to the other end where the IR LED is. You will definitely benefit from the IR remote always seeing your IR source, but it would be a bit of a challenge if you would want to use your IR pen as you would do a standard marker/ballpen. Ex. if I am going to write a down stroke onto the surface, the effect on the other tip would be an upward stroke as seen by the wii remote, except of course you keep the discipline of aligning both ends with respect to the remote mentioned earlier.

Matt
This has been suggested many time as broorb says the IR-Pen needs to be held horizontal. Which is problematic when reaching for the extremes of the board.
However, you may have hit the solution, a short IR-Pen.

and oh, I failed to mention. If your pen is too short, you will not suffer from the problem that I mentioned, and tracking would get more accurate. Depending on how you would want to write onto your board, I guess your setup is fine. Some people prefer the feel of a longer pen, I know I do.

yes, you definitely need a short pen to maintain accurate tracking. It needs some adapting to get used to the required technique, but after a few minutes I found I could use it very easily and it then seems to be straightforward. A major plus is that the Wiimote gets a direct view of the IRLED, so the signal detected is strong.
Cheers,
Matt

Tracking works perfectly for me and mine faces the board. What is your setup of wiimote relative to writing surface etc..?

This setup (short IR Pen) will work very well on the Plasma TV screen where the reflection is so poor.

I read this post the other day and it got me thinking. On my drive home today I came up with a concept and tonight I finished making it. I used an old glove. I cut off everything but the index finger and wrist band part. I attached the IR light to the back of my finger and the momentary button to the front of my finger. I ran the wires down the glove and hid the battery pack inside the wrist band. Now I have a pressure button pen that's on my finger. I tried it tonight in my classroom and it works very well. Plus because of the switch on the front, I know where I have to hit everytime to get what I want. It looks a little ghetto with my duct tape, but it's pretty awesome anyway. I'll put some pics up tomorrow after I use it with the students.

Here are some pics from my pen. You can see the red momentary switch in one of the pics. in the wrist band is my battery.

Dr Matt, have you thought of trying a side mounted LED? A year ago I built three pens with the side mounted leds described in my post linked below. The result is very good. The LED is facing 90 degrees closer to the wiimote, its still near the 'drawing' point, and it is a high output led. My tests had the wiimote out to 19' from the projected surface (although the wiimote loses resolution at that distance). I've now used this setup in front of clients at architectural reviews three times without fail.
You may also want to see my mini version and the summary of my pens...
