This could be a stupid question, but if remote controls use infrared light could they be used a ir pens?
Are they strong enough and do they use the right frequency?

Some do some don't, you won't know until you test it. A Vishay TSAL6400 or TSAL5300 costs 50 cents, worth the purchase to know it works.
