I've got a mouse that I can use for my pen, its got a 850nm IR light, how suitable is that for the purposes of making an IR pen?

Not sure on question by 'mouse' what do you mean? Its an IR-led you need a 950nm is the preffered light specrum by the Wiimote so if your 850nm is not the best.
