Hey.
How about having a single, huge, thread where we all post our pictures of the IR pens we have. This is going to be a big 56k WARNING. It'll probably help some people to get some insparation. So, yeah. Go ahead, post your best pictures.

ok i'll be first i suppose...
here's mine, it holds one AA battery between two springs i pulled out of click-pens. the only thing i actually bought on this was the momentary switch, the rest were various plumbing (water and gas) parts i found along with the solder and whatnot...i'm thinking of trying to replace the AA battery with a stack of watch sized batteries. I also made a nicer looking one out of an LED penlight which i replaced the LED to an infrared one i found out of an old TV remote (the remote had two) and i had to file the led housing down to expose the led a bit better, but here's pics of the one i'm proud of =)
Sorry for the crappy quality, but you get the idea...you cant see it too well, but it has a small exposed blue wire and the momentary switch is just glued on the outside of the main housing...

LED $1.99, Pen Lite $1.99, Duct tape $???
Pen Lite contains 2 AAA batteries. LED soldered to the front of the first battery and the second is flipped backwards taking it out of the circuit. This reduces the second battery to the status of spacer/spare but it
reduces the voltage to 1.5v taking away the need for a resistor. Shortening the pen barrel is also necessary to get it all to work.

I have several variations based on an easy to mod USB rechargeable LED pen:
1. IR LED inside and IR outside top mounted
2. IR outside side mounted
3. IR tip
4. All 4 of them

Wiimote Friends
My Pens:
This is my first fully functioning pen. (I made a few before this that a) didn't work, b) had wires going everywhere or c) looked/worked terribly). The grommet comes out and the rechargeable battery slides out and can be put in a recharger, whilst still connected.
This is the pen my students use. It is very cheap and easy to replace IR-Led if dropped.
The parts list is in the youtube description.
This is my latest and greatest pen. I made two identical IR-Pens together, they work fantastically! Plus they look awesome and the recharger was a really cool idea. I prefer the thinner one, mostly because the shrink wrap gives it a nice feel. I wanted to try a fatter body as always used the thinner ones, I find the thinner pens feel more ergonomic with the switch added.
The parts list is in the youtube description.

Wow!
This must be the coolest custom made IR pen in the world. Wished I had one too.
Currently I am using a very unreliable IR pen. My switch is constantly causing the IR source to blink. I have to press it at a weird angle to get the switch to turn on.
Will create a better one, once I have completed the application.
Once again, great work!
P/S: Maybe you can start making and selling IR pens.

No intention to start wholesaling pens (too many other big ideas)!
Not sure about fellow users but I find it unacceptable that the man that is putting in a huge amount of time to do some really cool work on the Wiimote Smoothboard doesn't have a good IR-Pen.
I just bought the parts, so PM me your postal address, and I will assemble this Low Brow tech item this weekend and post on Monday!

Ben,
Couldn't agree more, Boonjin is doing amazing things and need a decent pen, i'll be testing out the new release in the classroom tomorrow, the school i'm at has just currently ordered 100 Vishay TSAL6400 LEDs and plan on putting together a heap of pens with the gifted and talented students.
I have one question, you use a rechargeable AAA, and as far as i'm aware, you were using the above diode which has a forward voltage of 2.6 and a AAA only has 1.5V. how much does it affect pen performance or have you changed diodes?
