hey, i have decided that i want to give a shot at making my own ir pen. but unfortunately, i know practically nothing when it comes to this sort of stuff. i have absolutely no idea on what parts i need and whats good.

can anyone help me? i will most probably be buying everything of farnell, considering that i live in australia and the tsal 6400 are impossible to find.

any suggestions as to what item/parts to buy? (resistor, wires, switches and what ever else i need)

thanks!  Smiley

Schematic

Note: This schematic varies from how I made the pen in the movie. Use this schematic as it seperates the charging and Led curcuits, preventing blowing the Led by pressing the button during charging. If you use a different power source you may need a resistor (can be put anywhere in the Led curcuit) use http://www.wiimoteproject.com/ir-pens/electronics-101-sharing-my-mistakes!-***-updated-***/ to calculate the correct resistor required.

All this fits very nicely insided either a 'Bic Velleda' or 'Artline 577' with the SPDT at the very base of the shaft and the battery tight against the 3.5mm plug embeded in the end cap.

Goodluck

Any AAA or AA NIMH battery charger will do.
This one is cheap: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=MB3505&CATID=18&keywords=&SPECIAL=&form=CAT&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=295

In the latest version of pens I used a 45cm peice of 16mm dowel then attached the two wires on the end with small self tapping screws on each end. So I just plug into my pen, then insert the dowling into the battery charger just like a battery (+ & - marked on the side). Works better than messing arround getting the alligator clips to attach and hold.

hmm... might go for that. thanks.
do you know how much postage costs with farnell? is it free over $10? because considering that i already will be making a purchase from their, i may aswell buy the charger from their. unless it works out cheaper.

I had a quick look at fanell site, couldn't find anything worth while. Given they are really an international commercial components distributor, this is not really their thing.

Yes, they seem to have no postage fee on orders over $10Aus (never charged on the 4x orders I made). The funny thing is the parts come from UK and if you buy from the UK farnell site it is $20 delivery, go figure?

If they did have a charger, farnell is a international distributor so there is a good chance will have a foreign plug, a pain in the butt!

I suggest you stick to the Jaycar charger, has bonus of being able to charge any NiMh/NiCad battery. I have saved big $$$ since I switched to rechargable everything. I haven't brought a battery in years, plus good for environment.

Then buy $10aus of Vishay TSAL6400. I think at that quantity they are only $0.50ea. You will want some spare (stuff up solder, etc). Plus when you show it off to your friends they will want one, so you can just 'on sell' the IR-leds (or your first prototype so you can make a better one).

I have a box of 100 Vishay's - I dont think it costs me $10Aus dollars to ship from Sweden...regular mail is enough for a small padded envelope (small jiffy for example)
