Most simplistic IR pen

Hi all, After being inspired by Johnny Lee's TED Talk on YouTube, I began working on an IR Pen of sorts. I didn't actually us a pen, but an LED Flashlight by Princeton Tec (the Pulsar). It is a little finger pinch style LED flashlight. I popped open the case and replaced the white LED with an Infrared LED from Radio shack. The flashlight coast about 7 dollars, and the LED from Radio shack was 2 dollars. No soldering, resistors or custom case work required. Attached are pictures of products. I have not tried it with the wiimote yet. I will be as soon as I get home and then posting the results.

I tested this unit out at home last night, and here at work today. It works GREAT. Only comment is that the switch is a pinch style and after prolonged use, your fingers get sore from pinching it. Other then that it works great.

I use a similar setup for my students. I have a fully functioning pen for myself then I have a few of these (slightly different case but same principle) the students use to interact with the whiteboard. If they drop/step/throw it it is no great loss.

I found an even cheaper way and it works just fine.
Dollar Tree (sunbeam) LED light retractable ype keychain
remove screws, replace LED with Infrared LED
put screws back in. Works just fine with push button

I have an almost identical setup, here's the specs on the Radio Shack IR bulb (comes with a detector too)
Reverse Voltage; 5v
Continuous forward current; 150mA
Forward Voltage; 1.3V typ, 1.7V max
Radiant power output; 13 - 15mW
Wavelength at peak emission; 950nm
works pretty well, although it's a little iffy on a big projector screen (it reads the LED, but the tracking lags a little bit and is jump) with a VISHAY fix this?
