Interesting, I'm planning to do mine just as simple as yours is.
I have a question though. Doesn't it need a resistor?

If you are using a 1.5volt battery you need a resistor

If you are using a 1.2volt rechargable you dont need it
(if the IR-LED is 1.2 volt of course)

I don't use resistor, but I don't know if I need it. Because I finded the IR led in a old box in a cabinet. But the led no had burn, and I turn on for more than 1 minute.

here is my tip

http://ledcalculator.net

Many IRleds are 1.2volts, yours might be as well...

But hey - you didnt pay anything so you have nothing to loose - if it burns...then you get a new IRled (that you know the specs on)
