Hi!

After a bti of research I came across the webcam Mod. Typical results weren't all that impressive as theres a bit of latency/lag.

I've read this is due to the the quality/resolution of the webcam, where the wiimote greatly excels at 1024x768.

To my knowledge standard webcams come as 640 x 480, so I figure in order to get better tracking results on whiteboard/LCD I need to find a better webcam with a greater resolution.

A few eBay searches led me to these:

10.0M 6 LED USB Webcam Web Cam Camera for PC Laptop+Mic

12M USB 12 MEGA Webcam Driverless PC Video Camera + MIC

I'm really not all that technical when it comes to reading specs, but for the first webcam i noticed..
Max dynamic resolution: 1600 X 1200 pixels
Max static resolution: 3648 X 2736 pixels

and for the second I noticed
Dynamic : 2592 x 1944 (5.0M) Mega pixels,
static : 3840 x 2880 (12M) Mega pixels (software)

---------------

So, would any of these webcams (modified) provide similar tracking to that of the wiimote?

Donny
Webcam:
Even a reasonable quality webcam costs about $30+
Huge lag between view & action
Not wireless

Wiimote
$40
No lag
Wirless
High quality tracking
Develop software

This comes up regularly and yes you can do some cool stuff, but not to the quality for the price point.

I have however seen some amazing work using a high res digital camera (I assume hacked in some way to get live feed). If they can match the quality then we have real competetion. The best advantage was OCR from the device.

benpaddlejones, I'm curious to see where you saw the work done on the high quality webcams. Do you have a link, or was it just "around"?

That is indeed cool. Nice stuff there. I noticed the lag though between the camera and the displayed image. I wonder if that was a  design choice to lower processing power necessary, or the limitations of the camera.
