Your initial design will work for your purposes.  However, it does look like you are overpowering your IR LED. This is because you are using two AA (I think) batteries.  If you were to wire just one AAA or AA battery, you would not need a resistor.

It looks like the simplest fix is just wiring one AA or AAA battery to your setup.  You can purchase a single AAA battery holder from radio shack for almost a dollar. If you insist on using two AA batteries, I would suggest you search for a resistor calculator in google and determine what resistor you need by plugging in the appropriate specs.

But just to make sure, say I'm using a resistor calculator, like this: http://led.linear1.org/1led.wiz

Since I'm using two AA batteries, with 1.5 volts each, in that source voltage box I'm putting 3 volts, right?
