I have posted several
q?.  however no help recieve.d
for all you that have problems with the radioshack LED
they are actually good.
I have mine with a 1 aa bat. non resistor
the problem with them is that they spread light
so I add a plastic cap to consentrate the light and now I am getting tracking much much better
see the pics with and wihtout the cap.

What might work better is to drill a small hole directly down the center of the led. Be careful not to hit the diode itself, but drill in towards it until your about 1/16" from it. That helped tracking here.
