Author Topic: Using Smoothboard - Drivers never finish installing  (Read 11645 times)

I'm using Windows 7 and a generic bluetooth adaptor I picked up at Penteractive(uses MS drivers). I start Smoothboard 1.6, press the 1/2 buttons on the Wiimote, and Windows says it's installing the drivers. It goes into this cycle of trying to install the drivers, looking for drivers at Windows update and starting again. If I try to start Smoothboard, I get, "No Wiimotes Found in the HID Device List". I can add the Wiimote using "Add a Device", it Windows finds the Wiimote, and goes through the same cycle. This worked pretty well at one time. Not sure what changed. I use this with 7th and 8th grade students...it would be great if it worked (I paid for it!).

Hi,

Please do get a screen shot of the HID list in the Device Manager so that we can help you to troubleshoot.
This is found under
Control Panel -> System->Hardware ->Device Manager.

There may be conflicting devices that have been installed previously.
For this, you may need to remove all your HID devices and reinstalling them as required.

If the Wii Remote does not have sufficient battery level, the connection may fail too. Please do ensure that there is at least 2 or 3 Blue LEDs blinking when you press the 1+2 buttons.

Another tip is by removing and reinserting the batteries which may help to connect your Wii Remote.

If your computer connecting to the Wii Remote is slow, the Wii Remote may be switched off before the Wii Remote is successfully connected. Therefore, you may need to keep pressing and releasing the 1+2 buttons repetitively until the Wii Remote is connected.

I attached a screen shot in a word doc...hope that's ok. I didn't see anything in the device manager that listed HID devices specifically.

As far as the batteries are concerned, I've checked those and they are good (4 lights). I've removed/reinsterted too. I've also pressed the 1+2 buttons repetitively. Let me know if there is any other information you need.

I am having the same problem also, have deleted devices and reconnected with no success.  It has connected previously, but the process appears so slow in W7; almost as if in attempting to find drivers each time it loses connection and starts again.

PS: Got a job teaching finally (paid employment is great) but no IWB's in the place I soooo need to get SB 1.6 working!

Hi David,

Is this a new computer? If I am not mistaken, previously it has been working on your computer.

There may be issues with your HID drivers/service.

Maybe can you email to me your screenshot of the device manager with the expanded HID devices list? My email is admin at smoothboard .net

Have you tried repetitively pressing and releasing the 1+2 buttons? As you have mentioned that the connection process is slow, the Wiimote may have been switched off before the computer is able to connect to it completely.

Greetings,
I had the same problem, I do believe I have it fixed.  I have Win7 64bit. 

Windows 7 takes a long time installing device drivers...longer than the wiimote stays on.  Even on the same device on repeated attempts.   So by the time Win7 decides to finish the install, the wiimote is turned off.  So Win7 says "device unplugged."  Sometimes there is a backlog of 2-3 installs.  Sometimes you get lucky and it installs right off (why it worked once or twice before.)

On several wiimote webpages they show where they have cut a piece of an eraser to hold down the little red button in the wiimotes battery compartment; it works the same as the 1+2 buttons.  So try this:

If the Smoothconnect shows the hardware address on startup, you do not need to press the "Learn" button again.   (I use to keep clicking it.)  Hold down the red button.  When Win7 tells you it is installing device drivers, click here for progress, click and open that window.

You will see each attempt to install the drivers, and finally it will work successfully.  It may have to repeat a couple backlog installs.   It will then tells you that the device is installed and working fine.  The  wiimote will only show one blue light rather than flashing several....that means it's connected.  Then the application will load and all will work, and you can release the red button  Just don't hit the red button again!

What would be nice is if someone can write or configure Win7 to use the previous driver rather than installing fresh every time.  It does the same with my jump drives, no matter how many times I plug them in.
