IR Pens / touch-sensitve pen
« on: January 27, 2011, 08:53:03 PM »
i want to build a touch-sensitive pen. ive seen a couple ideas and only one how-to which seemed alright, but i feel like there must be other ideas out there. i want some ideas so i can expand on my own ideas before i commit to them and begin building. what have you contemplated, built, or seen?

Other Projects / powering sensor bar via usb
« on: January 13, 2011, 10:39:00 PM »
I want to add a usb cable to my sensor bar for pc use. I understand the LEDs in the bar collectively use 7v of power, and the usb is 5v. Watching a youtube video on this, I learned that removing 4 LEDs would solve the insufficient power issue but I am left wondering if this is all a good idea..

Will I retain all functionality? Is there anything wrong with this idea in general?

alternatively, ive also read it is possible to power the entire sensor bar (all 10 LEDs) with one 9v battery. the problem there is over-powering. but broken down each LED is only over powered by what, less than 1/4v? what possibility is there that i could completely ruin my sensor bar this way?

Wiimote Interactive Whiteboard / increase reflection from tv?
« on: January 13, 2011, 04:13:39 PM »
I have a 50 inch samsung plasma tv I am trying to use as the whiteboard. Im having problems getting a good read from it though. Looking at thethe tv through my digital camera to view the ir light shows me it is absorbing probably a bit too much light. Is there anything besides cleaning the screen that may help?

IR Pens / built IR pen! works beautifully! except..

this might sound dumb but i was excited when i first discovered the whole whiteboard thing, so i rushed into this.. i ripped an IR LED out of an old remote.. did not check the viewing angle before constructing my pen..

it looks from what i can see with my digital camera (most can see IR, did you know?) that looking at the LED from the side, and especially the rear-side angle, you can hardly see the light at all. i am doubtful the wiimote will be able to detect this. (havent tried, bluetooth dongle is in the mail!)

i briefly googled my problem and seemed to find an old post on an unrelated subject which happens to also be able wide viewing angles for LEDs. it was said:

The viewing angle of your LEDs is too small,  increase the viewing angle by filing the LED lens tips down flat, almost to the metal part and then make the final finish transparent matte (not too shiny, not too rough).

...their viewing angle is too narrow for head tracking but this is easily fixed by filing the lens tips down flat. This reduces their brightness due to a wider emission angle but they're still no less bright than commercially bought wide angle LEDs like SFH485P.

so i am considering filing down the tip of my LED. i am far too impatient to wait for the correct part to come in the mail. i will of course order it, but in the mean time.. will this work? maybe? tips? (how do i make the finish transparent matte??)
