Here's my completed whiteboard pen for the wiimote hack.

I made this using only a AAA rechargeable battery, a micro push switch, an IR LED (20mA 1.3V supply), and a lot of locktite! (see below). The LED is from Rapid Electronics (see datasheet http://www.rapidonline.com/netalogue/specs/58-0100.pdf) with a peak bandwidth of 940 nm. It fits snug in the end of the pen, with the aid of locktite, and is then connected to the push switch mounted on the side of the finger grip. I drilled a small 2.5mm hole in the side of the pen to pass the wires through. the problem I then had was ensuring a good connection with the battery while making it easy to replace. the end of the pen fits tight while remaining still easy enough to remove. I used a spring loaded probe glued in the top cap of the pen (gold bit of bottom photo) soldered to a wire to make contact to the positive side of the battery. I then used a spade connector, as used in car wiring, and cut a slot in the pen just above the grip for it to pass through; this will make contact with the negative side of the battery. To complete the circuit I soldered a wire to the spade connector and glued the whole lot to the pen.

Just need to get the software setup to use it, in the mean while I tested it using the sensitivity screen on the wii and all is good.

just finished mine yester day eve.
I have a some what more advanced design (lookie down).
same setup, led, switch, and battery :)
thx for testing. I made it for some one who would test it, this makes it posible to skip testing >.<.
I might have to change the front "lens"so that it fractures the light more.

P.S. this is what you get when my friends come with the idea, I start building and my dad butts (electronic engineers.. they always want perfection) in :P

V2 will be remodded too V3
V3: 1 LED on USB feed /w LMB and RMB
V4: 1 LED WIRELESS /w LMB and RMB
V5: we'll see :3

Nice pen! Yes i need to make some mods to improve light diffraction through the sides of the LED. I am thinking of glueing some foil to the tip, or sanding the tip to make it opaque. Will post the results.

gonna start on V2 as soon as posible (problem is we don't have Radioshacks in Holland >.<)
it will be a 3 LED on USB feed ^^

btw with my pen there is no option  to roughen it up for more fracturing, ill have to roughen up lens lol. but first testing, ill have the results in about 10 hours ^^

Could you guys give more info on the make, model, url, for the components you used?  I'm an electrical n00b, and could use as much info as possible!  Where did you get your switch from?

I usualy get my parts by taking them from electrical stuff i dont need any more. (you only want a button switch so you can use it like a real pen by the way) If you live in england You could go to B&Q, someone there could help you. i dont know about places anywhere else.
