Title: consensus on ready-made pen?
Post by: Gilthalas on March 21, 2008, 04:08:37 PM
Hi everyone,
I've tried going back and reading most of the posts here, but I can't come to a conclusion - has anyone found a pre-made (i.e. I can buy it online or at the store) IR pen that works well with the Wiimote Whiteboard?  I'd like to buy them instead of making them (especially since work will pay for them ;)).  If you have any good links, please let me know here.

Thanks,
Gilthalas

I've ordered a few of the Streamlight Stylus I/R Combo styli.  I'll report back if they're worth it or not.  Amazon has them for about $15 USD.

wow, that's really cool. I searched forever looking for a commercial made IR stylus, and low and behold the answer was found in night-vision flashlights.

this looks just like a professional version of my first prototype. and the same problems are likely to haunt the user of this pen. that is, namely, the projection of the LED in reference to the camera. this should work pretty good if you mount the wiimote from the top facing downward at a steep angle and the stylus facing upward, but I've found that this can lead to diminished precision in tracking and cursor coordination. the wiimote really tracks best the when its perspective is perpendicular to the screen. also, mounting the wiimote from above the screen can prove to be a cumbersome challenge. the way that works best for me is to just set the wiimote on top of the projector, but in this setup you will have to hold the pointer backwards so that the wiimote can see the IR beacon. the best design is to make one that has the led facing directly backwards, or in whatever position is optimal to place the wiimote.

Title: results of testing the Streamlight Stylus I/R

The Streamlight stylus is nicely built, but the location of the power button is indeed not helpful as a virtual stylus as it is on the end of the pen.

The LED is also recessed so you have to rely entirely on the writing/projection surface reflecting light back to the Wiimote to see.  This doesn't work very well, but that may be different with some other type of front projection surfaces.

While I like the stylus for its build quality, the performance for the virtual whiteboard is less than ideal in a front projected, front tracked situation.  It may work very well for rear projection and rear tracking but I've not tested that yet.
