I put together a VERY thorough explanation and video of how I made my IR pens, along with a shopping list.  Hopefully this will help others avoid the hurdles and gaps in information I encountered along the way.

I suggest you use a TSAL6400 if wanting to use a larger surface like a whiteboard you will find the radioshack IR-Led is not quite up to the job at a distance.
