Is there such thing as an IR Laser. Can a standard laser pen bulb be replaced to emit IR?

Seems to me then you have a very focused beam of IR. could the wiimote pick up the laser dot and track it? Im sure it could, ive seen a chotto shot fo PSP track a red laser on a wall.

Just seems like maybe you replace the light source in a laser to IR and this whole laser pen problem is solved.

I don't know if you can manage to have a normal laser pen into a IR laser pen, if you could, the point where you are targeting will indeed be traced by the wiimote, but i don't know if you can do it easiliy, the normal IR lasers are the carbon dioxide ones (too expensives, big, anyway you can't use them), or, I think the laser from a cd-rom, a discman, any that uses normal CDs uses IR laser, so, you can possibly find them with some ease, the problem would be to see what you are targeting at, hehehe, if you can't see the laser, you can't see where you are pointing at :P

Yes, IR lasers exist.  However they're generally either too low power for the spot to be detected from any reasonable distance, or unreasonably expensive.  A better approach would be to use a high power IR LED and put collimating optics (a convex lens with the right focal length) in front of it.  The Wii Remote doesn't really care how big the spot is (within reason) so for something the size of a whiteboard it doesn't matter if the point is 5mm or 5cm.

If you're just looking to image a laser spot, another option is to remove the Wii Remote's IR filter (the black window in the front) and place a filter matched to your laser there instead.
