been lookin around for supplies to build my own wii white board light pen, and i happened across this

thinking i might snatch a couple up, and switch out the led with an IR led.

looking closely at the picture of the pen it looks like the led is sticking right out of the end just like most of the home made ones ive seen

also the switch on the top can be twisted on for continued use

i figure its worth a try for only $11

any thoughts?

AAAA batteries? Ick, that is much too obscure for myself.

I don't see a finger-button near the top, but that's the only problem I see.

I guess it would boil down to personal preference. I would like to build one myself for a couple of reasons, personalized design and learning by doing.

a hardware in my area has these with white led's. i had the same idea but couldnt get the main part out to change the led.

they are assembled well but it seems a little too well for my comfort of ripping it apart. the top of mine does not unscrew and pressure would need to be applied directly to the led which could damage its inner workings.

also mine said to be waterproof so that lead me to believe a sealant or adhesive was used upon initial assembly.

you can try it but i had no luck. that company does actually make an IR version if you can find them.

plus AAAA batteries are harder to find and more expensive.

plus the on switch is on the very back which makes it harder if you are trying to do mouse clicks with it.

meh, i already ordered 3 of em, only $11ea i'll try my hand at it if they break they break if not, score and if i have any luck i'll post some pictures / walk through, so other can try it with out breaking maybe, hopefully it'll work.

if it does break i can just use the shell and put in my own wire/switch/batteries

as for the mouse click thing, im left handed so, i can write/draw and use my mouse anyway

as for the AAAA i live near alot of places that sell them, but i order most stuff online anyway saves me gas from driving around trying to find stuff.

i'll post again in 3-5 days when i get em

well i got the LED pen lights i ordered, today

was pretty easy to take apart without breaking anything, i unscrewed the battery cap, took out the batteries, used a flat surface (kitchen counter) to start to push the bulb out, then used an alan wrench to get it the rest of the way out.

the component that holds the led bulb in place is a little piece of plastic with the leads wrapped into it, a little bit of a pain to dismantle with big fingers, but i found a paper clip to get it started, and it wasn't to hard to take apart after that.

the pens i ordered had red LEDs in them, still waiting on my IR LEDs that i ordered, so i'll post again once i have it assembled.

also, the button on the top if you hold it down and twist the battery cap tighter will keep the light on with out having to hold down the switch manually.

should work fine as a pen, i myself am left handed so using my mouse while writing and such isn't a problem for me.

on mine it wouldnt come out using that method. I got the white bulb one but im sure that doesnt make a difference. it just feels like it is glued in.

congrats if that works for you though.

i had to put quite a bit for force to push it out, as i said before, if it breaks it breaks, if not, score.

main thing is i wasn't afraid to break it, it wouldn't be glued in though, by looking at the component if it was glued in, you wouldn't be able to turn it it on because the batteries wouldn't make contact with the LED.

I purchased this pen from Amazon also which already has an IR LED in it. The pen is VERY uncomfortable to use because the button is on the back. I think I feel Carpal Tunnel coming on!

if you hold down the button on the back, and twist the battery cap tighter it will leave the pen on with out having to hold down the switch
