Title: My first pen & power supply
Post by: OfficerMike on June 09, 2008, 04:57:32 PM
My idea was to build a reusable power supply box borrowing concepts from ObsidianX's USB/phone cord device. Mine, however, uses a mono audio cable to connect pens, rather than a phone cable, and it also has a resistor built into the supply box, so there is no need for a resistor in each pen. Each new pen only requires a momentary switch, a 1/8" audio jack, and an LED. This also allows me to connect multiple pens just by attaching a splitter.

My power supply has a retractable USB cord from a notebook mouse on clearance at RadioShack ($10), a 68 ohm resistor, a 1" x 2" x 3" project box, and a 6' long 1/8" mono audio cable.

My first pen uses RadioShack's 276-143 LED, a 1/8" audio jack, and one of three ridiculously tiny momentary switches taken from my sacrificial notebook mouse (good device for parts), all inside a normal Crayola marker body. The LED is mounted in the tip with a soft foam earplug.
