Right now, specially marked boxes of the cereal "Frosted Mini Wheats" contain a light up Indiana Jones spoon. It seems that you can remove the head (designed to do so), and replace the LED with an infared one and you can have a very good IR pen! I have not modified it myself, but is has an on-off switch at the bottom, and an activation button near the top that can easily be pressed with your index finger or thumb (or any other finger for that matter). An LED can be seen from the tip, but I don't know about the power output. Mine is orange, but is comes in red and yellow too. Prying aroud the on-off switch can probably break the seal to get inside.
