It seems like this is the best LED to get (according to the posts I have read?  If I am wrong, please don't hesitate to let me know.)  Where is the best site to buy these LED's?

Yes Vishay TSAL6400 is the best (the TSAL5300 is better if you have a really good reflective surface) but generally the TSAL6400 is the ducks nuts!

I have already built a pen with the radio shack version and am looking to improve on that.  Is the Vishay 6400 an upgrade?  Also, will the N battery still power it?

Has anyone looked into (actually bought and tried)some of the other Vishay IR LED's?


The TSAL 5100, 6100 seem incredibly bright, but they have a small 1/2 angle.


Is the only difference between the TSAL 6400 and 7400 the color of the LED housing?
6400 blue hue, 7400 clear?

From 6400 data sheet "molded in clear, bluegrey tinted plastic packages."

From 7400 data sheet "molded in clear plastic packages."

The rest of the specs seem to be the same, am I missing something?

Francisco uses the TSAL5300 and swears by it. I think they to similar to bother, see my response to your question in http://www.wiimoteproject.com/ir-pens/electronics-101-sharing-my-mistakes!-***-updated-***/.

If everything on the data sheet is identical, then yes just different housing colours.
