On face value yes?

In reality it is simply a case of 'suck and see'.
There are a number of IR-led's which have identicle data sheets to the Vishay TSAL6400 but do not perform as well? I tried the Osram-271 (Don't quote me on the part number) it's datasheet almost reads word for word to the TSAL6400, it also cost 5x as much from http://www.farnell.com (about $2.50 versus $0.50 for the Vishay).

But in testing it performed at the same standard as the http://dse.com.au (australian Radioshack) IR-Leds that have much lower specs.

I thought it was the IR-Led so I tried a different one, re-soldered everything to make sure quality connections still no good. As soon as a soldered a Vishay TSAL6400 onto the same rig, no problems.

My assumption is it's like globes. You can go to a hardware store and buy 5 different 75watt globes as the same size, opaque, inert gas, etc. Yet they will all produce slight variations in light. Given the desired light wave length is set by the filter (remove it, turn the lights off and the wiimote will track any light source) I wonder if the characteristics of the filter are move specific than just the wavelength?

Benpaddlejones :)
p.s. Great to see a programmer playing with some of JCL's other projects! If you produce something worth sharing, you can post it on the 'Download' section for others to download.
