IR Pens / Am I that dense?

I picked up a 276-143 from Radio Shack.  The package says 1.2V Forward Voltage, 100mA, 45degree angle.

I can't get this thing to light up at all!  I've tried changing polarity, and am using a single 1.5V Duracell Ultra AA or AAA battery.

And yes, I'm using a digital camera to preview the result.  I got another infrared to work (from an old remote), until I blew it on a 3v supply.

Did I get a dud?
