Anyone here knows Johnny Lee personally? Perhaps can get him to post some demo codes ? :-)

Other / Building a IR Array
« on: February 07, 2008, 01:30:00 AM »
Hi

I want to build a IR array for the VR experiments; where the Wiimote tracks IR from the reflective tapes paste on the fingers.

I've got a few questions:

1. How many IR LEDs are required?
I want to use if on everything from a laptop screen, PC LCD screen to a projection TV, and LCD TV

2. Do you know the exact wavelength of the IR that wiimote is sensitive?
I recently bought a bunch of IR LEDs that emit a detectable red glow when powered. These are unlike some IR LED I had earlier that has no detectable output seen by the naked eye. I find that the wiimote is less sensitive to the new batch of IR LED that emit the red glow.

3. Do i need a large spread angle?
Do I need to flood that whole area with IR or just a small angle will do?

Thanks and hope to hear some input.

Cheers!

Thanks, Helza, for the great work!!

I wonder if you are able to port your work to Linux (Ubuntu)? :-)

Cheers!

IR Pens / Re: Prebuilt IR pen light found.

Hi Diffusion, I live in this part of Asia where AAAA batteries are very very rare and are very difficult to find...
come to think of it, I have never ever seen AAAA batteries here. I had a laser that I bought in the US years ago and it uses AAAA batteries and now when the batteries dead, I am left with an expensive stick :-(

I managed to download and test the following apps:

1. PuzzleGame
2. Tuiodemo

PuzzleGame works but very jerky movement

Tuiodemo took sometime to figure out and when it finally work, it works for 1 second.
I can see a dot when I use the IR pen but the next moment, the software goes unresponsive the IR pen.
The software is still running but it is just not responding the IR pen.
Quit and restart repeats the same behaviour

I have not tried it but from all the readings/videos/description, I LIKE it VERY VERY MUCH!

Will probably try all the demos later when i have more free time ..

Please keep this post updated!!

Thanks!

Some laptops comes with a webcam....

Does anyone knows if these can be hacked to do some of these wiimote based whiteboards, VR, etc...

Just a thought..

IR Pens / Re: Help powering IR LED

prolonged 5V on your IR LED probably killed it.

An AA battery will probably do since the forward voltage is only 1.3.
And yes, the most important thing is that you can't see IR. If you have a mobile phone with camera, use it to view the IR LED when connected to the battery. you will see a bright white light emitting from the LED. :-)

Hey, with Wiimote having 2nd/3rd/4th life as a PC whiteboard, VR, etc tool, will the wiimote price soar?

Will 'oem' version start to appear? :-)

Yeah, I pluck them out while the T-100 was sleeping.. :-)

I bought the micro-switch at 50 cents each.

Yeah, this is a 'for fun' type of project.
Took less than an hour to source for parts and build.
I build this 'prototype' version because I want to experiment with different resistors and LEDs.

I am working on the 'real' ones which is more robust and hopefully, more usable.

 ;D
