I had done it with the radio shack one because other people said it had worked fine...unfortunately my projector was broken and just arrived fixed by dell so could finally test this out. I highly doubt I have time before the school year starts to get an order from that company to get that type of LED IR.

So, are there any suggestions for me to figure out to make this work better OR 'buy' a solution that I can have in my hands before this weekend?

New to public school, in a new school, using the computer mainly due to the fact that the autistic children respond better this way.

When I taught private school I used a tablet with my projector, and that was easy, but I cant do that in this new school so I am in a bind.

So, anyone, any thoughts? I am more than willing to pay for a solution that will save me before thursday/friday the latest but I need to figure out one.

I used the radio shack recommended LED for this pen. I used an expo dry erase marker and unfortunately only could find a double A battery casing so I had to mount it on the outside. Truthfully the entire pen doesn't look professional at all. However it does work.

Now here is the issue:

The entire LED is mounted on the outside of the pen cap, so there is no blocking of the light at all, it can go out at the 180 degree angle that the LED is capable of doing.

Whenever I use it with the whiteboard software the pen is completely inaccurate. I have done a test with it both as a tablet and as a whiteboard and in both instances I never had an accurate cursor from the pen.

Any help would be appreciated, need to have this working before this Thursday.

I did read but I am really confused.

People seem to be fine using 1.5 batteries with LEDs when I read the LED specs it says 1.2 forward voltage so unsure does one need a resistor or not?

Also, it doesn't matter it seems that N, AA, or AAA battery is used except for the knowledge that depending on the battery depends on the life of the pen.

Did you use the 276-143 (or as the package also says 276-0134 IR LED?

Also you didn't need a resistor? The LEDs I saw at radioshack had a forward voltage of only 1.2 versus the battery that is rated for 1.5

Working on putting mine together, only thing radioshack didnt have was a single battery holder so been working on finding one in the area but been wondering what to get for it + if I needed a resistor

Okay, so I got the best IR LED they had (1.2 45 degree angle, 100ma part# 276-143) but they didn't have the battery case for a AAA battery. I got an easy push momentary switch for it and all of it should fit easily into a modified whiteboard marker case. However I am wondering if anyone who has used that LED and

1) What power source are you using?

2) Are you using a resistor?

3) To everyone else, any issues I should be made aware of? Have read a lot of threats esp. the 101 one. Going to try for the first time to solder something lol, probably going to put everything together and wait for finding the right power supply and a resistor if I need it.

That's what I did.  You push the button with your finger, not by pressing it against the board, so you don't have to worry about the surface.

If I was to go and get and LED from Radio Shack (if I can find the best one they have) could I swap it out from that project?

IR Pens / Have a few questions for those experienced with building pens and using them

I'm a Junior High Teacher and I have been wanting to do this project for awhile. While I have been able to connect my wii remote to the laptop I haven't constructed my pen at all.

I need a design for a pen that meets the following needs

1) Use for wall only

2) Sensitive enough to draw graphs, pictures, and to write with

3) Simple to put together since I have no real engineering experience.

Also I need help on being able to figure out where I should put the wii remote. My desk will be about two feet away from the board (currently not sure if my next year classroom will be white or blackboard, if its a blackboard will this affect the use of the pen)
