IR Pens / Re: New Light Pen Concept
« on: November 24, 2008, 07:51:02 PM »

I've read most of the threads for the pens and LED's used but haven't got my hands on any of the Vishay's yet.  They really are that drastic of a difference eh?  I found everything except dragging or writing to be very reliable with the ones I found at a local electronics shop while getting my setup together last week.  I'll have to get myself some of the Vishay's on my pen before I worry to much about pen design.

Myself personally prefer holding my HID like a pointer rather than a pen.  I have never been able to write on a blackboard or whiteboard to save my life anyways ;)  I supposed I shall create a pen and pointer variation once I get the correct LED's

Thanks for the reply Ben!

IR Pens / New Light Pen Concept
« on: November 24, 2008, 11:52:54 AM »

Quick intro, thank to those hosting the site and everybody working on this project.  I am a tech in a school board and am currently working towards introducing this system on a wider scale to help supplement the high costs of the product that's currently being pushed.  I have received huge interest from teachers who have not yet been the recipient of the commercial (50x more expensive) product.

During my prototyping I was trying to figure out a way to help reduce the "viewing angle" issue with the camera and being able to clearly see the IR source.

Instead of the LED coming straight out of the end of the pen it is set at a 90 degree angle so that when your holding it like a pen, it keeps the LED pointing directly at the camera for the strongest signal.

it takes some practice to get the hang of as it is easy to rotate your wrist to undo the effect, however I have found it to be much more reliable for dragging and dropping which my traditional pen lacked quite a bit.

Similar concept to diffusing the IR light I suspect.

Has anybody tried something similar? what were your results?
