Title: Free Lightweight Whiteboard Software - MassiveBoard V1.3 now available
Post by: GaryJones on August 29, 2009, 12:04:16 PM
Hi All,

I have written a lightweight Java Whiteboard application which can be used hand in hand with Uwe's wiimote calibration software. I actually still use Johnny Lee's software and it works fine.

The reason I did this was that I do quite a bit of presenting and developing and found lots of issues with existing whiteboard software that just didn't do what I wanted it to do. Either they were too heavyweight with features I just didn't want or they cost money or they just didn't have the features I needed. So, I did something about it and I wrote my own.

The application now works on versions of Java back to Java 5 thanks to Timothy Wall and the team at the JNA project

Some features that I think make it stand out are :

Help documentation can be found in the same location as the download for the application

Launch with java -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true -Xmx1024m -jar MassiveBoard-1_3_3.jar (the -Xmx1024m is not necessary unless you plan to create a LOT of images and never clean them out)

AND away you go. Start to draw using the IR pen. (Clearly, you can test it with just the mouse)

The project has been uploaded to the downloads section of Wiimote Projects->Whiteboard
You can find documentation, a Windows exe for easier launching (optional) and the application JAR file there.

All of the above can also be found at
http://www.intellectfactory.com:9998/downloads or
https://www.intellectfactory.com/downloads (accept non-root signed certificate)

Please send me some feedback, defects, requests for new features etc...
Enjoy

Great little app, I'll use this for sure.

My suggestions:

- Don't take too many suggestions, there are many full featured apps out there what there isn't is really basic one like this
- Ability to import and manipulate multimedia
- Transparent background so an annotation tool in one app

Feel free to add to the downloads (I had same probs as Uwe).

This has been very useful in my first grade class. It would be great if we could toggle between clicking and drawing instead of having to hide massiveboard to click

Hi,
I am a fifth grade teacher and I got the basic Wiimote whiteboard going in my Mac based classroom but I think the Massiveboard would offer more of what I need.  I downloaded it successfully but can't get it to launch on my Mac.  Can anyone help?
thanks so much to everyone that makes all this possible--this way of teaching is so motivating for the kids!

Hi,

New version posted up and should do what you need. Works back to Java version 5.

I am thinking about this feature now. Next version is 1.2. This feature is likely to be in V1.3 (probably within a month or so)

Something worth thinking about if you are on the MAC is using Uwe Schmidt's software. You can find it at

http://www.uweschmidt.org/wiimote-whiteboard

It should get you connected to the Wiimote using bluetooth. Then you are up and running.

This was resolved by removing the old executable and replacing it with the new one.

It doesn't close, but does not work as expected unless you initialise JNA properly which the new executable does for you.

I just starting playing around with this yesterday, and it's fantastic.

Great Job, Gary.

I am having a strange problem starting MassivBoard v1.3 and I am hoping someone can help.

I have downloaded both the Windows executable and the Java versions to my computer.  When I try to start either version, nothing happens.  But, if I move MassiveBoard.exe to a USB thumbdrive, plug that into the same computer than I am having trouble with, and start the program from the USB drive, it works fine.  So, the software runs fine on my computer but only if I start it from a USB drive not the hard drive.

Any ideas what could be the cause of this?  I did notice that when I start the program from the USB drive a .log file is created.  When I start the program from my hard drive, nothing happens, and no .log file is created.

Thank you in advance for any helpful suggestions.

One possibility is that you may have more than one version of MassiveBoard (jar file and exe file) on your hard drive.

The exe works with the version it was intended to launch. Suggest you delete all MassiveBoard "exe" files and
download the latest version of MassiveBoard (1.3.4) and the executable that goes with it and try again.

The other possiblilty is that you have no disk space left on your hard drive. Check this out and fee up some space.

Let me know if this does anything. Nothing else should really be an issue.

By the way, you need to make sure that the exe and jar files are in the same directory when you launch them.

Thank you for the help.

My first mistake (embarrassingly) was I didn't realize you needed the .exe and the .jar file.  I should have based on file size, but I didn't.

So, I redownloaded everything from www.intellectfactory.com

After I fixed that, I tried starting the program from the command prompt using the proper script and received an "invalid or corrupt .jar" file.  Out of curiousity, I redownloaded the files again, but this time from the wiimoteproject.com download section.  These files worked fine and everything seems good.  There might be an issue with the files on the intellectfactory.com site.

Again, thanks for your prompt help.
