Greetings - first post here. Love you guys

FYI - I have created two Light pens from Radio Shack parts (Using the AA battery holder [Catalog #: 270-401], the I.R. Led they offer [Catalog #: 276-143], one with this button switch [Catalog #: 275-1547], and one with the rolling switch [Catalog #: 275-017]. I like the roller switch better, the button takes more pressure which can start to hurt the finger tip after a while.
Using the pens on the plasma is terrible. I actually have to turn them around backwards, then they work a charm. I made a nasty looking pen from a battery, LED, and switch and taped the whole mess together in the smallest bundle possible with the LED facing backwards. This ugly little guy makes the best plasma light pen, but you aren't going to impress anyone with it.
I figured that I just needed to get a better LED, but I grabbed a nice projector from work and brought it home to test it out. Imagine my surprise when the pens worked perfectly! I mean, super accurately, like you would expect from a commercial setup (save the fact that the pens are red and blue Marks-a-Lot

).
I would like to know if this is expected behavior AND if a LED upgrade would fix the plasma scene (the upgrade is going to be like 10 bucks because I have to have the little guys shipped and shipping costs 21 times the cost of the LED...).
