Title: Trouble calibrating on laptop
Post by: tedtabby on April 19, 2008, 09:37:17 PM

i'm calibrating the wiimote on a laptop screen, as i dun have a projector to play with. I managed to get the wiimote connected via bluetooth, got a IR LED pen, but when i try to click on the calibration dots, it fails to register.

the wiimote picks up the reflected IR from the pen off the laptop screen right? when i point the IR  directly at the wiimote, it's reported in the "Visible IR Dots" dialogue box, but clicking on the screen, the wiimote does not pick it up.

are there specific IR leds that i should use? does other factor like sunlight, laptop brightness come into play? really would like to get the app up and going :)

I think it has to do  with the fact that your TFT is prepped with antireflective coating

Try to use a placemat like i did in this picture

antireflective coating? that would explain it :) there goes my "touchscreen" :P

well, i managed to get a classroom to test on the projector screen but the same problem arises, the wiimote could only detect the IR if it was pointed directly at it, not if it was reflected off the screen. Maybe my IR LED is not powerful enough? i got it from a hardware store, it was the only type they had and they did not have any specifications for it.

could be... try to replace the LED and use the ledcalculator to get your spec...

The screen on my laptop leaves almost no reflections versus the ones that uses a glossy "glass screen" (I think you know what I mean)

For your laptop you can try putting a piece of Plexiglas over your monitor. The Plexiglas may reflect the infrared light.

Sounds like your IR-Led does not cut the mustard!

Read: http://www.wiimoteproject.com/ir-pens/electronics-101-sharing-my-mistakes!-***-updated-***/ (http://www.wiimoteproject.com/ir-pens/electronics-101-sharing-my-mistakes!-***-updated-***/) it will explain all you need to know about IR-Led's and powering them correctly.

I suggest the Vishay TSAL6400.
